With two quality starts and timely hitting, FIU swept a doubleheader from Manhattan Saturday at the FIU ballpark. The Panthers (4-6) took the first game, 7-3, and won the nightcap, 5-3, against the Jaspers (1-5). Both teams agreed to a seven-inning game in the second game.
Game 1 – FIU 7, Manhattan 3
Left-hander
Dominic LoBrutto, making just his third career start, went a career-high 7 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run while striking out eight batters to lead FIU in the opener of the twinbill. LoBrutto (1-0) scattered three hits and walked just one batter to record the win.
The Panthers jumped on Jaspers starter Ryan Takacs (0-1) early with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The big hit in the inning came on a two-run single by
Derek Cartaya to left center scoring
Kolby Follis and
Kobe Lopez.
FIU tacked on three runs in the eighth highlighted by a two-run triple by
Irving Lopez. Cartaya also drove in a run with a squeeze bunt. Cartaya was 2 for 4 with four RBI in the first game.
Irving Lopez was 2 for 5 with two RBI.
Game 2 – FIU 5, Manhattan 3
Irving Lopez was at it again in the second game, delivering the go-ahead run with a single to right scoring
Adam Sevario in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Sevario singled with one out in the inning to get the rally started.
FIU scored four runs in the fifth.
Javier Valdes followed with an RBI double plating Cartaya, who walked.
Irving Lopez and Valdes both came home later on a wild pitch by Manhattan starter Tom Cosgrove (0-2). Valdes scored from second base on the same wild pitch that brought home
Irving Lopez.
Valdes and Sevario were each 3 for 3 in the second game.
FIU led 5-1 and was bolstered by six strong innings from starter
Andrew George (1-1), who allowed six hits, three runs, two walks and struck out five batters.
Chandler Raiden notched his first save with a scoreless seventh inning.
FIU and Manhattan conclude the four-game series at 12 p.m. Sunday. The original game time was 1 p.m. but has been moved up an hour to accommodate the Jaspers' travel plans.
