FIU freshman right-hander
Nick MacDonald limited Manhattan to two hits over 7 2/3 innings to lead the Panthers past the Jaspers, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the FIU ballpark.
FIU (5-6) took three of four games from Manhattan (1-6) in the series that saw the Panthers win the final three games of the weekend.
MacDonald (1-0), making his second college start, allowed only one run, walked one and struck out nine Jaspers.
MacDonald retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced before the Jaspers got their first hit. Manhattan designated hitter Evan Brown hit a solo home run to left with two outs in the fourth inning for the first Jaspers safety. Michael Pfenninger singled in the top of the seventh for the only other Manhattan hit.
Alex Demchak got the final four outs of the game to wrap up the series for FIU.
Adam Sevario helped FIU break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out,
Zach Files reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to second base on a throwing error by shortstop Anthony Rocchietti. Sevario followed with a line drive single to left center off Manhattan starter Joey Rocchietti (0-1) scoring Files with the go-ahead run.
In the fifth,
Kenny Meimerstorf's RBI single scored
Derek Cartaya, who singled to lead off the inning, to make it 3-1 FIU.
The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by
Jack Schaaf and
Irving Lopez. Schaaf stole two bases in the sixth.
Lopez and Meimerstorf each had two hits.
FIU begins a stretch of five games in five days Tuesday with the first of back-to-back games with the University of Miami. The Panthers and Hurricanes meet in Coral Gables at 6 p.m. Tuesday. FIU and UM play at the FIU ballpark at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
There is no PantherVision or C-USA TV broadcast of Tuesday's game in Coral Gables, but Wednesday's game will be broadcast on PantherVision and C-USA TV.
The Panthers host Charleston Southern in a three-game series beginning Thursday, March 9.
