Saile's One-Hit Shutout Completes Weekend for @FIUSoftball

Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 5, 2017) -- FIU freshman Shannon Saile tossed a one-hit shutout as the Panthers defeated Bryant 4-0 to complete the Citrus Classic II Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida. FIU improves to 15-6 on the season, posting a 4-1 mark in the weekend tournament. Bryant slips to 1-9 on the season.

The shutout was the second of her career after a two-hit shutout of Georgetown on February 12. She appeared in three games and struck out 22 batters in 16 innings during the weekend.

The Panthers got all four of the runs in the first two innings and turned the game over to Saile and the defense to put away.

Senior first baseman Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep HS) hit a two-out double to right and an error and hit batter loaded the bases for Jocelin Soto (Oxnard, California), who was hit by a pitch for an RBI and the 1-0 lead.

FIU scored three runs in the second, the first coming on an error. Texeira drove an RBI single through the right side to score sophomore Jackie Schoff (Bradenton, Florida / Lakewood Ranch HS), who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Later in the frame, senior Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) stole home as part of a double steal and the game settled at 4-0.

Bryant had a baserunner in all but one inning, but only one reached second, off a successful sacrifice bunt in the first inning. Saile retired seven Bulldogs in a row at one point midway through the game. She struck out eight, and allowed three walks and two hit batters to improve to 3-5.

Texeira and freshman Brianna Bahadue (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) each had two of the Panthers' 10 hits in the game. Four different Panthers scored the runs.

The loss went to Bryant starter Logan Paul, who slides to 0-2. She gave up seven FIU hits and allowed three walks and two hit batters in 2.1 innings. She did not record a strikeout.

The Panthers will play a pair of games Tuesday in Fort Myers, at FGCU. FIU takes on Holy Cross at noon, followed by Ball State at 2:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at FIUSports.com for both.
