FIU Women’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with 7-0 Win at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 15, 2017) – In the team's final regular season match, the FIU Women's tennis team (19-1, 2-0 C-USA) defeated Florida Atlantic, 7-0, in Boca Raton on Saturday afternoon. 
 
The Panthers picked up their 17th-straight win, and 13th shutout of 2017 with the victory over the Owls (11-10). It marked the 12th-straight win for the Panthers over the Owls, while FIU improved to 8-1 away from the FIU Tennis Courts this season. The 17-match winning streak is the second-longest winning streak in school history, one behind the school-record of 18 in 2001.
 
The Panthers started the day with a 1-0 lead following doubles play, winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The duo of Andrea Lazaro and Nina Nagode defeated Laura Fabrizi and Ana Gutierrez, 6-3, improving their overall record to 18-3. Maryna Veksler and Ulyana Grib clinched the point defeating Heather Walton and Naiya Oden, 6-2. 

In singles action, No. 44 Lazaro defeated Fabrizi 6-3, 6-4. With the win, Lazaro improved her overall career record to 44-13 (31-2 in dual matches). Veksler and Mina Markovic won in two easy sets against Boos (6-0, 6-0) and Gutierrez (6-1, 6-2), respectively. Nagode defeated Ruiz, 6-3, 6-4, and Grib won against Rudenko in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (4),10-4. Gabriela Ferreira remained undefeated in dual matches, beating Biglione 7-5, 6-1 and improving her record to 10-0. 

Up next for the Panthers is the 2017 C-USA Tennis Championship, April 20-23, in Denton, Texas.
