Romy Gonzalez scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning to help Miami squeak out an 8-7 win over FIU Tuesday night at the FIU ballpark.
The Panthers (25-17) now lead the season series 2-1 over the Hurricanes (20-20) with the series finale set for Wednesday in Coral Gables.
Gonzalez led off the ninth drawing a walk off FIU reliever
Dominic LoBrutto (1-2). Gonzalez moved to second base on a ground out and to third base on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the go-ahead run.
FIU rallied twice in the game before taking a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by
JC Escarra.
The Panthers fell behind 4-0 in the second inning before tying the score with two runs each in the bottom of the second and third innings.
Irving Lopez had a two-run double in the second and
Javier Valdes tied the score, 4-4, with an RBI single in the third.
Down 5-4 in the fifth, the Panthers evened the score after Valdes's sacrifice fly scored Escarra, who led off the inning with a walk.
Zack Soria was 4 for 4 for the Panthers. Escarra and
Nick Day were each 2 for 4.
FIU and UM conclude the season series Wednesday at Mark Light Field in Coral Gables. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
