FIU reliever Franklin Van Gurp was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 25th round of the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday afternoon. 

Van Gurp, a junior, had been pitching for just one year before coming to FIU last season. The right-hander made 19 appearances all out of the bullpen for the Panthers last season. Van Gurp was 0-1 with a 2.91 ERA and two saves. Van Gurp struck out 32 batters in 21 2/3 innings pitched.

Van Gurp joins FIU teammates: catcher JC Escarra (Orioles - 15th round), catcher Zack Soria (Braves - 18th), reliever Dominic LoBrutto (Red Sox - 18th) and shortstop Irving Lopez (Cardinals - 19th) as Panthers drafted thus far through 25 rounds of the draft.
