MIAMI (Oct. 5, 2018) - The FIU swimming and diving team capped the first day of the TYR Fall Classic presented by Swiss Timing in second place overall as the Panthers enter Saturday in contention for the meet win.

Florida Gulf Coast leads the pack with 244.5 total points, while FIU closed out Friday with 223.5 points to sit in second place. The Eagles and Panthers are well ahead of the rest of the field, with Army (204), Grand Canyon (192.5), George Washington (187.5), TCU (187), Florida Atlantic (167) and Old Dominion (150) rounding out the scoring on Friday.
The Panthers won a total of four events on Friday, while posting five runner-up showings.
Carita Luukkanen won the B final of the 100-yard breaststroke, after beating the field with a time of 1:05.62.
Melannie Vargas claimed the B final of the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.48.
Helga Fodor (50-yard freestyle A final - 24.13),
Sara Gyertyanffy (100-yard butterfly - 56.44),
Stephanie Hussey (400-yard individual medley - 4:28.61),
Naomi Ruele (50-yard freestyle B final - 24.04; 100-yard backstroke - 56.93) placed second overall in their respective events.
On the diving platform, the Panthers swept both the A and B finals of the 1-meter event.
Maha Gouda continued her successful season with a 272.50 score in the 1-meter A final, while
Rachel Foord won the B final with a 273.45 mark. Both scores were NCAA qualifying marks.
UP NEXT
FIU will wrap up the TYR Fall Classic on Saturday, while also sending a group to Fort Myers to face Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida.
