MIAMI (Oct. 6, 2018) - The FIU swimming and dive team closed out its first home meet of the season on Saturday, as the Panthers posted a second-place finish at the TYR Fall Classic presented by Swiss Timing.
Florida Gulf Coast came away with the win after scoring 478.5 for the meet, while the Panthers were close behind with a 454.5 to claim second overall. TCU (390), George Washington (387.5), Grand Canyon (384.5), Army (369), Florida Atlantic (327) and Old Dominion (310) rounded out the scoring for the weekend. Army took the crown on the men's side with a 493.5 score for the meet.
"The event was a great success overall," head coach
Randy Horner said. "Our partners, TYR, Swiss Timing and Rice House of Kabob really stepped up to allow us to put on a first-class experience for the athletes."
FIU's swimmers took three events, as
Stephanie Hussey (500-yard freestyle - 4:58.39),
Helga Fodor (100-yard freestyle - 51.98) and
Sara Gyertyanffy (200-yard individual medley) all took their respective events, while
Maha Gouda won the 3-meter diving event on the platform.
On the diving platform, the Panthers continued their success from Friday's 1-meter victories as Gouda and
Rachel Foord finished first and second in their respective groupings. Gouda posted a 276.65 score to claim the A final, while Foord scored a 268.05 in the B final to finish second.
Over in Fort Myers, the Panthers earned a pair of wins against Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida. FIU defeated UNF by a margin of 99-32, while taking down FGCU 73-58.
Megan Bowen had a stellar day after leading the Panthers with three wins in the pool.
Bowen (100-yard freestyle - 52.10; 200-yard freestyle - 1:52.32; 200-yard individual medley - 2:07.39),
Anna Topolanski (1,000-yard freestyle - 10:44.47),
Holly Shepherd (100-yard individual medley - 1:00.81),
Nicole Hunnewell (50-yard breaststroke - 30.68; 100-yard breaststroke - 1:06.30),
Alexa Bryant (50-yard freestyle - 24.16) and
Stephanie Hernandez (500-yard freestyle - 5:14.00) each picked up wins in Fort Myers for the Panthers.

"We were a much better team today," Horner said. "We couldn't quite dig out of the hole we created yesterday at the Classic, but the ladies swam and dove well and had great spirit today. Our travel squad also did an exceptional job at FGCU to give us a split with them this weekend."
