MIAMI (March 17, 2018) – The FIU women's tennis team (9-1) defeated Marquette (5-7), 4-0, for the team's eight-straight victory and fourth home win on Saturday, March 17, at FIU Tennis Courts.
The Panthers, ranked No. 38 in the latest Oracle/ITA ranking, won their ninth match and third shutout of the season.
FIU won the doubles portion of the match. The pair of
Andrea Lazaro and
Nerma Caluk, won their tenth consecutive match at the third position and defeated Marquette's Lesley Foe and Isabella Franks, 6-1. The tandem of
Mina Markovic and
Sandra Bozinovic, lost against Andrea Amortegui and Paula Tormos, 6-2.
Ulyana Grib and
Maryna Veksler, ranked at No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings, clinched the first point of the day for the Panthers and downed Natalia Popovic and Fleur Eggink, 6-4.
In singles play, Grib won the first singles match against Marquette's Eggink, 6-1, 6-0, giving FIU a 2-0 lead. Lazaro won against Popovic 6-3, 6-3 and this victory marked her 20
th in the season. Caluk at position No.5 clinched the third match for the Panthers this season, and defeated Andrea Amortegui 6-2, 6-1. On the other courts, the Panthers did not complete their matches.
FIU will play next against UTEP on Monday, March 19 at the FIU Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
