Middle Tennessee tops FIU 5-3

Middle Tennessee scored five runs in the sixth inning to rally past FIU, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Felsberg Field.

Despite the loss, the Panthers (24-23, 6-8 Conference USA) still took the series from the Blue Raiders (28-17, 7-8 C-USA) winning two of three games on the weekend.

Down 3-0 in the top of the sixth, MT got a two-run home run from Kristin Uselton and a solo shot by Dani Munoz to tie the score. The Blue Raiders added two more runs in the inning on an FIU error and an RBI single by Lexi Cushing.

FIU scored first Sunday in the first inning. Tatyana Forbes and Jessica Rivera singled. Later in the inning, Julia Gilbert singled off the third base bag scoring both Forbes and Rivera to put the Panthers ahead 2-0. Gilbert had six RBI in the series.

The Panthers made it 3-0 in the fourth. Venessa Gallegos doubled with two outs and scored after Kayla Whitehead singled her home.

Kasandra Castle was 2 for 4 for the Panthers.

Shannon Saile started for FIU and went 5 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, five runs and struck out seven.

The Panthers return to the diamond next Saturday in Denton, Texas. FIU opens a three-game series at North Texas. The weekend begins with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
