FIU Sweeps C-USA Doubleheader at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – FIU first baseman Kasandra Castle and shortstop Jessica Rivera combined for eight hits, two home runs and nine RBI and sophomore pitcher Shannon Saile won for the 16th time this season to lead the Panthers (26-23, 10-7 C-USA) to a Conference USA doubleheader sweep at North Texas (22-23, 8-9 C-USA) Sunday. FIU won the first game, 6-0, and took the second game 8-3.
 
Saile (16-9) struck out eight in six innings, allowing just four hits and walking two. In game two, Megan Kugelmann (6-7) allowed two earned runs in a complete game effort and struck out four. FIU hit .345 in the series led by Castle and Rivera who combined for four of the Panthers six extra-base hits, Venessa Gallegos, Jackie Schoff and Tatyana Forbes each finished with three hits in the doubleheader.
 
The Panthers moved into a tie for third place in the C-USA standings with two regular season series remaining.

The Basics
  • Shannon Saile struck out eight in six innings, allowing just four hits and walking two.
  • The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on Kasandra Castle's two-run home run and a sacrifice fly from Venessa Gallegos.
  • FIU tacked on two more runs in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead. Gallegos and Kayla Whitehead each had RBI singles in the frame.
  • Jessica Gilbert's RBI double in the top of fourth finished off the scoring for the Panthers.
  • Castle finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Gallegos was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Basics
  • FIU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning for the second straight game against the Mean Green highlighted by Rivera's RBI triple.
  • North Texas pulled within 3-1 in the bottom of the second on a RBI single from Kourtney Williams.
  • The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the third. FIU loaded the bases on three straight base hits by Schoff, Forbes and Castle. Rivera then cleared the bases with a grand slam giving FIU a 7-1 lead.
  • North Texas added a run in the bottom of the third to make it, 7-2. But Castle drove in another run in the top of the fourth on a single to left field putting the Panthers ahead, 8-2. North Texas scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to draw within, 8-3.
  • Castle finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Rivera went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI. Schoff and Forbes each had two hits as FIU rattled off 10 hits in the game.
 
UP NEXT
FIU closes out its home schedule Saturday and Sunday when the Panthers host Charlotte in Conference USA action. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
