MIAMI (Jan. 12, 2019)– The FIU women's swimming team captured 10 of 11 events against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Saturday.
Competing without their diving counterpart, they finished with 127.5 points at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
Headlined with the 200 medley relay. A one-two finish in the event set the tone for how the rest of the afternoon would unfold. Led by senior
Naomi Ruele, junior Carita luukkanen, sophomore
Stephanie Hussey and freshman
Helga Fodor, the Panthers clocked in a time of 1:47.62, to secure the first win of the afternoon. Nearly two seconds later (1:49.77), the squad of sophomore
Melannie Vargas, junior
Taylor Grabenhorst, freshman
Paloma Sanchez and Junior Alex Bryant took second.
Followed by the 1000 free, senior
Oceane Peretti was the victorious, finishing with a time of 10:49.68.
Junior
Berta Triola led the 200 free from wire-to-wire, touching with a time of 1:56.81, ahead of freshman
Holly Shepherd who finished in second place (1:57.17).
Ruele took first in the 50 free (24.41), before sophomore
Sara Gyertyanffy secured a victory in the 200 individual medley clocking in with a time of 2:08.98, to give FIU its fifth-straight win of the day.
Hussey lead the way in the 200 fly. She touched with a time of 2:05.47, ahead of the Blue Devils' Valentina Gomez (2:08.37).
The freshman duo of Fodor and Shepherd followed with two more first place finishes in the 100 free and 200 back, with times of 52.94 and 2:07.40, respectively.
The winning streak halted during the 500 free. The lone event that the Blue Devils managed to capture throughout the afternoon. FIUs'
Victoria Cantu recorded a third place finish with a time of 5:23.30.
Junior
Taylor Grabenhorst answered back when she battled in the 200 breast (2:24.13), and the willing streak commenced. FIU ended the day by winning the 200 free relay (1:37.40) behind the team of Fodor, junior
Alexa Bryant, Sanchez and Ruele.

The win marks the first dual meet victory of the spring slate. FIU is back in the pool when they host FGCU on Saturday Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
