MIAMI (Feb. 10, 2019) – The FIU softball team earned a pair of wins over Bryant and UConn on Sunday, as the Panthers closed out the Felsberg Invitational with a 4-1 record to open the 2019 season.
FIU earned a 5-2 win over Bryant to start the day, before downing UConn by a 7-0 margin in the afternoon. Prior to Sunday, FIU earned wins over Memphis on Friday (2-1) and Saturday (4-1), with the Panthers' only loss coming to Michigan State (5-0) on Friday night.
Allison Muraskin (1-0) and
Megan Kugelmann (2-0) each earned complete game victories. Muraskin pitched six scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the final frame, while Kugelmann earned a shutout.
FIU received a jolt of energy from
Kallie Jones against Bryant, as the freshman sent her career-first home run towering over the center field wall to put the Panthers up early. Fellow freshman
Rebecca Koskey doubled down the left field line to bring home two Panthers in the third inning, while
Jessica Rivera went 2-for-4 against Bryant and earned an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Jackie Schoff led the Panthers against UConn, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Freshman
Alexis Johns also had a good day against the Huskies, going 1-for-2 as she drew two walks, stole two bases and earned two RBIs to cap her day.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will make the short trip over to Fort Myers next weekend, as FIU takes part in the FGCU Tournament.
