Panthers Split Day One at FGCU Tournament

FIU downs Lamar before dropping contest to Memphis


FORT MYERS, Florida (Feb. 15, 2019) – The FIU softball team opened play at the FGCU Tournament on Friday, as the Panthers split on their opening day at Fort Myers. 
 
The Panthers down Lamar 7-0, before falling against Memphis 4-0 to cap the day. FIU is now 5-2 on the year, with another day of action set for Saturday against Memphis and Lamar. The Panthers take on Memphis at 10 a.m. ET and Lamar at 12:15 p.m. ET to close out the weekend in Fort Myers.

Jackie Schoff led the Panthers on Friday at the plate, earning two RBI and collecting three hits. Natalie Orcutt and Deven Kennedy each scored two runs to aid in the 7-0 victory against Lamar. 

In the circle, Megan Kugelmann pitched six innings against Lamar as she allowed three hits and no runs. The senior fanned seven batters to improve to 3-0 on the year.  Allison Muraskin picked up the loss against Memphis, after pitching four innings and giving up three runs. 

In game one, Kallie Jones kicked off the scoring after singling to left field to bring around Orcutt. In the fourth inning, Schoff pushed the lead to 4-0 after singling up the middle to bring home two Panthers. After a bases loaded walk by Kennedy plated another run in the fifth inning, Natane Castaneda reached on a fielder's choice as Orcutt crossed home for FIU's sixth run of the game. Orcutt wasn't finished however, as she singled in the top of the sixth to score Schoff for FIU's final run of the game and earn the 7-0 victory.

In the second game of the day, Memphis jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Tigers went on to score two more runs, each coming in the fourth and sixth inning, as FIU couldn't create any offense plate and dropped a 4-0 decision.

UP NEXT
After the Panthers wrap up play in Fort Myers, FIU hosts the Panther Invitational on Feb. 22-24. Columbia, Rutgers and Monmouth visit Felsberg Field for the tournament.
