ATLANTA, GEORGIA (Feb. 28, 2019) – Panthers swim and dive completes day two of C-USA Championships in first place with 328.5 points.
Senior
Naomi Ruele captured a gold medal and the divers swept the three-meter springboard event.
Thursday opened with an early morning preliminary session that left the Panthers craving more when they headed into the final competition at night.
The senior in
Oceane Peretti started the night off with a second-place finish in the 500 Freestyle, where she achieved a lifetime best time of 4:46.78 and qualified for the NCAA B Standard. Sophomore
Stephanie Hussey entered with a time of 4:52.24 placing her in the number six spot.
In the 200 Individual Medley, Freshman
Holly Shepherd notched a third-place finish when she posted a time of 2:00.21. Teammate, sophomore
Sara Gyertyanffy touched at 2:00.68 for the fourth-place spot and junior
Carita Luukkanen tapped in at 2:00.99 for the fifth-place finish. Junior Taylor Grabbenhorst followed in seventh-place with a time of 2:02.72.
The third event of the evening ended with a win. Ruele clocked in at 22.15, for the gold medal in the 50 Freestyle. The time qualifies her for the NCAA B Standard. Freshman
Paloma Sanchez impressed with her time of 23.25 and bolstered a seventh-place finish in the event.
The divers swept first through fourth-place from the 3-meter springboard.
Maha Gouda took the gold medal with a score of 344.25. Earlier in the day the freshman set a new personal best when she tallied a score of 347.80 during preliminary action. Sophomore
Rachel Foord dazzled all day as well. The Melbourne, Australia native also recorded a personal best during prelims (335.70.) Her finals score was just .10 off from her preliminary score, which landed her the silver medal (355.60).
Brittany Haskell continued the diving board domination. The junior ended the preliminary session seeded fifth (270.80), but stepped it up and took home the bronze with a score of 302.20. Junior
Brooke Bouchard landed in the number four spot with a score of 302.10. Freshman
Kaitlyn Fredericks followed with a seventh-place finish with her score of 254.65.
Finals competition concluded with the 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Ruele, Sanchez, junior
Alexa Bryant and freshman
Helga Fodor battled from wire to wire to fight off the Rice Owls. The Panthers finished with a time of 1:31. 39, capturing the third silver medal of the night.

FIU will compete in day three of the C-USA Championship. Preliminary action is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Finals competition will begin at 6 p.m.
