MIAMI (Feb. 9, 2019) – A pair of timely errors helped lift the FIU softball team past Memphis on Saturday night, as the Panthers downed the Tigers 4-1 to close day two at the Felsberg Invitational.
FIU and UConn were scheduled to play in the nightcap, but multiple rain delays forced that game to be scrapped. The Panthers will face Bryant and UConn on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. ET.
FIU improves to 2-1 on the year following the victory, with both wins coming against Memphis. The Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season.
Leading 1-0 following a first inning RBI by
Jessica Rivera, the Tigers had a costly error by shortstop Baylee Smith who dropped a popup to bring home
Rebecca Koskey for FIU's second run of the night.
Memphis narrowed the gap in the top of the third by a run, but FIU again cashed in on a fielding error by Smith at shortstop as her throw sailed into right field and allowed
Alyssa Laboy and
Alexis Johns to push the Panther lead to 4-1. From there, the FIU defense allowed just one hit to close out the game with the 4-1 victory.
Kendahl Dunford pitched a complete game to earn her first win of the season, allowing just one run and striking out five batters. The sophomore also allowed just three hits on the night.
