Women's Tennis Hosts Top 20 Team

The Panthers welcome Texas Tech to the FIU Tennis Complex on Sunday Feb. 10.


MIAMI (Feb. 9, 2019) - On Sunday, Feb. 10, the women's tennis team welcomes No. 20 Texas Tech to the FIU Tennis Complex for a dual-match. 

This is the third time the Panthers and the Raiders meet head-to-head. FIU downed Texas Tech in the last two meetings, Including a 5-2 win over the Raiders in 2005

FIU enters Sunday after a 4-0 win against Seton Hall and a No.58 ranked doubles pair in freshman Kamila Umarova and senior Maryna Veksler.

DYNAMIC DUO
The Doubles pair of Umarova-Veksler were tabbed to the ITA Rankings list at No. 58 on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Currently 8-2 overall, they completed a seven game winning streak that started on Oct.13 that came to a halt at the ITA Kick-off Weekend against Loyola Marymount on Jan.26. They picked up their eighth win on Sunday Feb.3 against Seton Hall (6-3) in a battle that captured the doubles point for the Panthers and lead them to a 4-0 victory over the Pirates.

2017-18 IN REVIEW
The 2017-18 season was the year of many firsts, including the C-USA title program history after defeating Rice, 4-3. The Panthers won 17 matched and finished ranked No. 41 in the ITA rankings, the highest final ITA ranking since 2009, and have now ranked in the top 50 and earned at least 17 wins in back-to-back seasons. FIU did not lose in any home matches during the season and swept all six C-USA opponents tallying a winning percentage of .850. The Panthers earned their first NCAA berth since 2011 and just 9th  in program history, three Panthers were selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships.
 
WHAT'S NEW?
The Panthers welcome a talented crop of freshmen, Basak Akbas (Istanbul, Turkey) Paulina Bakaite (Vilnius, Lithuania), MariiaSolynshkina(Kemerovo, Russia) and Kamila Umarova(Tashkent, Uzbekistan) each bring an ITF ranking in singles play to FIU, with signs of being up-and-comers on the roster.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Panthers split the weekend in the New York Area, 1-1. They dropped their first match to Columbia 4-1 but prevailed against Seton Hall, 4-0.
