MIAMI (March 18, 2019) – FIU athletics had another jam-packed week, with eight programs competing over the past week. Highlighting the action was FIU women's tennis, after the ladies picked up two more victories to extend its nine-match win streak. FIU swim and dive's
Oceane Peretti also shined, after breaking a pair of meet records at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships.
Below is a brief recap of how each FIU team performed this past week.
Swim and Dive
The FIU swimming and diving teams divided and conquered last week. The Divers competed at the NCAA Diving Zones in Auburn, Alabama, while the swimmers represented FIU at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. At the NIC, the swimmers finished third overall after earning 465 points throughout the three-day competition. On the final day, senior Oceane Peretti broke two meet records in both the 1650 free and 1000 free. At Dive Zones, freshman Maha Gouda made history after becoming the first Panther to qualify for the NCAAs from a springboard event following a first-place finish and posting a score of 585.10. Gouda and senior Naomi Ruele will make the trip to Austin, Texas to represent FIU at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on March 20-23.
Women's Tennis
The FIU women's tennis team secured another perfect week on the courts, after picking up a pair of wins over Idaho (7-0) and Boston University (4-0). The Panthers have now won nine-straight matches, as FIU sports a 10-4 record overall and sits with a perfect 4-0 mark in C-USA play. The Panthers will take a break from competition, with FIU off until March 31 as it hosts UCF at 1 p.m. ET.
Baseball
The FIU baseball team started C-USA play in heartbreaking fashion this past weekend, after dropping two out of three to the Thundering Herd of Marshall. In the Panthers' lone win on the week, reigning C-USA Pitcher of the Week
Logan Allen shined again with five clean innings and eight strikeouts. The Panthers downed the Herd in 10 innings, after freshman
Chris Williams knocked out his first collegiate homer to give FIU the 3-0 win. The Panthers travel to Tallahassee for a midweek matchup against Florida State on Wednesday, March 20 before returning home to host WKU for a three-game set on March 22-24.
Softball
The Panthers dropped a midweek contest to Notre Dame on Wednesday, before falling to WKU three times to open C-USA play over the weekend. FIU will return to Felsberg Field this Tuesday as the Panthers host Buffalo for a midweek doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. ET. The Panthers will hit the road this weekend in C-USA play, as FIU travels to Middle Tennessee for a three-game series on March 23-24.
Men's Basketball
The FIU men's basketball team was eliminated from the 2019 C-USA Basketball Championship, in Frisco, Texas, with a 71-57 loss to North Texas in the first round on March 13. Prior to the game, the Panthers'
Brian Beard, Jr. and
Osasumwen Osaghae were honored by C-USA with All-Conference recognitions. Beard, Jr. was named a Second Team All-C-USA selection and to the All-Defensive Team, while Osaghae joins his teammate on the All-Defensive squad. Despite the loss to the Mean Green, FIU's season will not come to a close, as the Panthers accepted an invitation to the Collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT), and will face Texas State in the first round in San Marcos, Texas on March 23 at 7 p.m. It is just the second postseason appearance in the program's history and first since facing UCLA in the 1995 NCAA Tournament.
Women's Golf
Panther golf competed this weekend at the Clover Cup in Mesa, Arizona, which was hosted by Notre Dame. The team hits the links again in two weekends at the Edisto Island Invitational in South Carolina on March 31-April 1 to close out the regular season, before heading to the C-USA Championships in Fort Myers, Florida from April 15-17.
Track & Field
The FIU track & field team opened up its outdoor season with a number of strong performances at the Hurricane Invitational this past weekend.
Terrisa Russell set a school record in the discus, with a mark of 53.44, the top spot in the meet.
Reed Service debuted his outdoor season with a win in the long jump, and is tied for the 11th best mark nationally, and first in C-USA.
Clarissa Cutliff, coming off second team All-America honors, began her season with an east regional qualifying mark in the high jump, placing first with a jump of 1.76m. The Panthers will return to action this weekend in Orlando at the UCF Invite.
Beach Volleyball
The No. 7 FIU beach volleyball team hosted the first of its two events in South Florida, the FIU Invitational at Ft. Lauderdale on March 15, and posted a 1-1 record. The Panthers defeated No. 16 Florida Atlantic, 4-1, before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 2 USC to close out the one-day event. Earlier in the week,
Federica Frasca and
Margherita Bianchin were named the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Co-Pair of the Week following their impressive 4-1 performance at the East Meets West Invitational in Manhattan Beach, California. FIU, 6-5 overall and 2-0 in CCSA play, head up Interstate 95 this weekend to take part in the FAU Beach Bash in Boca Raton on March 23, where it will face Tampa (10 a.m.) and North Alabama (4 p.m.).
