MIAMI (March 20, 2019) – A seven-run outburst in the sixth inning propelled the FIU softball team to an 8-3 win over visiting Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon, as the Panthers picked up a midweek victory. 

Win the win, FIU improves to 18-12 on the year and Buffalo falls to 3-20 on the season. The Panthers and Bulls were slated to play a doubleheader on Tuesday, but Mother Nature scrapped those plans. Both teams agreed to a single-game contest on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.

FIU's Kendahl Dunford picked up the victory in the circle to improve to 7-3 on the year, after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing just one run to close out the game as the Panther bats came alive. Buffalo's Ally Power took the loss to drop to 2-12 after allowing six runs on the afternoon. 

At the plate, Kayla Whitehead led the Panthers as she went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk. Whitehead's single in the first inning was the Panthers' first run of the game, while her three-run double in the sixth was FIU's last on the day. FIU's 1-4 hitters in the order each earned multiple hits with Natalie Orcutt (2), Jessica Rivera (2), Madison Lewis (2) and Whitehead (3) leading the charge. 

The score would be 1-0 in favor of FIU until the fifth inning, before Buffalo would plate a run in back-to-back innings to take a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the sixth. The Panther bats came alive however, as FIU collected seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding lead in the sixth frame. The Bulls would score one run in the top of the seventh, but the deficit was too large to overcome as FIU took the 8-3 victory.

The Panthers will hit the road this weekend in C-USA play, as FIU travels to Middle Tennessee for a series on March 23-24.
