ORLANDO (March 22, 2019) - The FIU track and field team earned three victories to open day one of the UCF Invitational Friday in Orlando.
Asha James,
Terrisa Russell, and
Reed Service all took first place in their respective events. The Panthers are coming off their opening meet of the season last weekend in Coral Gables at the Hurricane Invitational.
Service, the reigning Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week, earned his second consecutive victory in the long jump, with a mark of 7.29m. Freshman Queshon Watson-Riggins was close behind, with a jump of 7.20m that was good for second place.
Russell, fresh off a school record in the discus, was back to her winning ways in the hammer throw, with a final throw of 60.26m. Russell, a senior and the defending C-USA Champion in the event, has now placed first in each of her first two meets of the outdoor season.
Sophomore
Asha James also was part of the success in the field events for FIU. James earned a victory in the javelin, dominating the competition with a throw of 49.07m, more than three meters ahead of second place. The mark was nearly ahead of her previous personal best, which was 47.34m - set at last year's conference championships.
Elsewhere, freshman
Rayquel Berry placed fourth in the long jump, with a mark of 5.73m.
Sabrina Quijano came close to setting a personal best in the 1500m, crossing the line in 4:50.97, nearly lowering her PR she set at Georgia Tech last season. On the men's side,
Daniel Areces placed seventh in the 1500 with a PR of 4:20.55, his best mark since last year's USF Bulls Invitational.
