Bats Lead FIU to Doubleheader Sweep Over Marshall

Panthers win 9-1 and 5-1 over the Herd

MIAMI (April 13, 2019) - The FIU softball team outscored Marshall 14-2 on Saturday, as the Panthers took the doubleheader to extend their four-game winning streak.

FIU began the day by run-ruling the Herd 9-1 in five innings, before Jessica Rivera hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Panthers a 5-1 win to cap Saturday.

With the win, FIU improves to 22-19 overall and 4-10 in C-USA play, while Marshall falls to 25-15 and 8-6 on the year. After taking two-of-three from Florida Atlantic last weekend, the Panthers have now clinched their second-straight conference series win.

FIU will look to sweep Marshall on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET. Live stats for all games can be found here. Game notes for this weekend can be found here. Tickets to all FIU home games can be purchased online at tickets.fiusports.com or by phone at 305-FIU-GAME.

FIU's Allison Muraskin pitched a complete game in the opener on Saturday to earn the win after allowing just one run on two hits, while Megan Kugelmann was given the win after pitching three innings in relief.

At the plate, Rivera led the Panthers after earning five RBIs on four hits with the highlight of her night being the walk-off grand slam in the second game. Jackie Schoff collected three hits on the day, while Natalie Orcutt hit a homer and earned three RBIs.

After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game on Saturday, the Panthers put up a seven spot on the scoreboard after a huge third inning.

A two-run single by AnnMarie Cooker began the scoring, before Alexis Johns sent one over the Marshall right fielder as she earned a two-run triple to put the Panthers up 6-0. After an RBI single from Schoff, Orcutt sent a ball sailing over the right field wall to bring the score to 9-0. The Herd would hit a solo shot in the next inning, but the damage was done as the Panthers earned the 9-1 run-rule victory.

The second game would be a pitcher's duel, until the top of the seventh when Marshall pushed across a run off a SAC fly. A bases loaded walk by Orcutt tied the game at 1-1, before Rivera crushed a homer over the left field wall to give the Panthers the 5-1 walk-off victory.

UP NEXT
