FIU Picks Up Series Win Over Southern Miss

Panthers earn an 8-6 victory


MIAMI (April 28, 2019) –  The Panthers picked up a series win over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon, as the FIU softball team downed the Golden Eagles 8-6 to cap the 2019 home slate.

Sunday's game served as Senior Day, with Tatyana ForbesDeven KennedyMegan KugelmannNatalie Orcutt and Jackie Schoff being honored.

With the victory, FIU improves to 25-23 overall and 6-14 in conference play, Southern Miss drops to 29-19 overall and 12-9 in C-USA.

FIU's Megan Kugelmann picked up the win in the series finale after allowing just four runs off four hits in three innings of work. Kallie Jones pitched three innings in relief, before Allison Muraksin came in to save the game in the seventh. 
 
At the plate, senior Deven Kennedy led the Panthers, as she collected two hits and two RBIs. Freshman Madison Lewis also picked up a pair of RBIs after her base knock in the fifth. 

Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead on Sunday, after plating two in the top of the first. The Panthers were quick to respond however, as a pair of hits and a walk drove in three runs to give FIU the 3-2 advantage. USM bounced back to retake a 4-3 lead, before an RBI single by Kennedy in the third tied the game at 4-4. A costly error by the Golden Eagles short stop brought home two more runs for FIU in the inning as the Panthers held a 6-4 lead exiting the third inning. 

FIU would go on to score two more insurance runs in the fifth after Lewis singled to left field to score two Panthers and make it 8-4. The Golden Eagles tried to rally in the final two innings as they closed te gap 8-6, but Muraskin slammed the door to earn her fourth save of the season and give FIU the 8-6 victory. 

UP NEXT
After Sunday's series finale, the Panthers will head to El Paso, Texas as the FIU softball team faces the UTEP Miners on May 4-5 for a three-game conference series to close out the regular season. Saturday's games are set for 3:00 p.m. ET and 5:30 p.m. ET. The series finale will be on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
