Panthers Look To Pick Up Series Win Sunday

FIU sets up chance for series win on Sunday

EL PASO, Texas (May 4, 2019) - The FIU softball team split on Saturday against UTEP, as the Panthers bounced back from a game one loss to win 4-2 to close out the day.

FIU is now 26-24 overall on the year and 7-15 in C-USA play. UTEP is now 16-32 and 9-14 in conference play on the year.

FIU will seek the series win on Sunday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. ET. Live stats for all games can be found here. Game notes for this weekend can be found here. Tickets to all FIU home games can be purchased online at tickets.fiusports.com or by phone at 305-FIU-GAME.

FIU's Kallie Jones was dealt the loss in the opener on Saturday, as the freshman gave up two runs and one hit in the fifth inning. Senior Megan Kugelmann picked up the win in the second game after pitching her fifth complete game of the season, after allowing just two runs off six hits.

At the plate, three Panthers went deep as Madison Lewis and Deven Kennedy hit long shots in the opening game, before Kameron Aitken hit her first career homer in the second game. Alexis Johns collected three hits and an RBI on the day.

In game one, FIU dug out of a 1-0 hole as the Panthers plated three runs in the third thanks in part to Lewis' two-run homer. UTEP hit its second long shot of the game in the bottom half of the third, as the Miners cut the lead to 3-2. UTEP posted a five-run inning in the fifth to take control of the game and a 7-3 lead. Kennedy's solo shot in the sixth would narrow the gap, but the Panthers couldn't overcome the Miners as FIU fell 8-4.

After exchanging runs in the first inning of Saturday's night cap, the Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of bases loaded walks. Aiken knocked her first career homer in the fourth over the left field wall to put the Panthers up 4-1 heading down the stretch. The Miners narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the sixth frame, but the Panthers prevailed and held off the home team as FIU clinched the 4-2 victory.
