MATCHUP PREVIEW
FIU is coming off a decisive victory over Kennesaw State (67-57) on Monday night. The Panthers sport a 2-1 record on the young season and look to make it two consecutive wins against teams from the state of Georgia.
Georgia Southern enters the contest with an unblemished 2-0 record, which marks only the second such start for the Eagles' in the past 15 years. The Eagles knocked off Power 5 foe Auburn (68-66) in their season opener on Nov. 11, before defeating Fort Valley State (99-71) last Saturday, Nov. 13.
ALL-TIME SERIES
FIU owns an 11-6 record in the all-time series against Georgia Southern. The two programs have not met since the 2008 season, with FIU coming up short in the contest by a score of 61-49. Prior to that, the Panthers had not seen the Eagles since the 1990s when the two squads were members of the NSWAC. FIU won four straight contests between1990-92.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Georgia Southern has three players averaging double-digit points through the first two games in forward Eden Johnson, guard Terren Ward, and guard Daeja Holmes. Johnson leads the Eagles with 9.5 rebounds per game and 5 total blocks, while Holmes leads the squad with five steals. Guard Mya Burns is average nine points and nine rebounds per-game.
FIU BY THE NUMBERS
Fifth-year transfer Ariel Colon leads FIU in scoring (27.7 ppg) and three pointers made (9) while shooting an impressive 53 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc.
Returning senior
Emerald Ekpiteta ranks second in scoring (11.7 ppg) and is tied with Colon for the team lead in rebounds (15).
Junior transfer
Olivia Trice leads FIU in three-point shooting percentage (.462) for all players who have attempted at least three treys.
Freshman guard
Tanajah Hayes and Colon pace the Panthers with eight assists apiece.
Kyla Nelson leads FIU with six steals, while Trice is pacing the squad in blocks (3).
LAST TIME OUT
FIU was ahead for a total of 37 minutes in its recent win over Kennesaw State, with the Panthers leading the Owls by as much as 19 points throughout the contest.
Ariel Colón broke out for a team-high 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.
As a team, FIU knocked down a season-high nine three-pointers on a blazing 64 percent shooting from beyond the arc, while sinking 57 percent from the field and 94 percent from the free-throw line.
FIU shot a perfect 9-for-9 on field-goal attempts in a brilliant third quarter, including 4-for-4 on treys.
The Blue & Gold forced 11 KSU turnovers on the night and capitalized with 16 points off those takeaways to go along with 12 points on the fast break.
For the night, FIU out-rebounded KSU by a margin of 32-22 and dished 12 assists to the Owls' six.
The FIU bench also outscored KSU by a whopping margin of 42-20.
