FIU Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Miami (OH)

Panthers pounce in game two

MIAMI (Feb. 27, 2021) – After dropping the first half of Saturday's doubleheader, the FIU baseball team bounced back in game two with a gutsy 8-4 victory over the Miami (OH) RedHawks.
 
With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-2 on the year. Sunday's series finale against the RedHawks is set for Noon.
 
Freshman Matt Fernandez tossed five shutout innings and struckout five batters to earn his first-career win on Saturday.
 
The Panther bats, led by Adrian Figueroa and Christian Eiroa, came alive in the nightcap to score eight runs.
 
Justin Farmer awoke the bats with a two-out double in the third and later came around to score on a RedHawk error that saw Derek Cartaya reach safely. Later in the third, Figueroa launched a line drive over the center fielder's head that ended up plating three, including Figueroa, who scored on an inside-the-park home run to give the Panthers the 4-0 lead.
 
FIU added two more runs in the fourth frame before Eiroa tattooed a home run over the left field wall to score Ben Rozenblum and ensure the Panther victory. 
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers and RedHawks conclude the weekend series on Sunday with a Noon first pitch. The game can be streamed on CUSA.tv.
