CONWAY, South Carolina (March 12, 2021) – FIU baseball outlasted the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Friday night, as the Panthers won their road opener 8-6.
Tyler Myrick earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-1, while
Angel Tiburcio picked up his first save since May 11, 2019.
In his five-plus innings of work, Myrick punched out five Chanticleers to push his team-leading strikeout total to 29.
The Panthers scored early and often on Friday night, including two solo home runs in the first inning coming off the bats of
Alec Sanchez and
Justin Farmer. FIU held a 2-0 lead until the fourth inning, when
Adrian Figueroa continued his tear at the plate with his own homer to give FIU a 3-0 lead.
FIU's scoring continued in the fifth when
Steven Ondina drove in
Luis Chavez with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later,
Juan Teixeira knocked in
Dante Girardi to push the Panther lead to 5-0.
Coastal Carolina answered back in the fifth however with two runs of their own to cut the Panther lead to 5-2. The two teams traded three runs each in the sixth frame, as Girardi and Ondina drove in all three of FIU's runs to put the Panthers up 8-5.
Coastal added one more run in the seventh before Tiburcio struck out four and earned two shutout innings to close out the 8-6 Panther victory.

FIU and Coastal Carolina will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch of game one slated for Noon.
