CONWAY, South Carolina (March 13, 2021) – The FIU baseball team prevailed over Coastal Carolina in game one of Saturday's doubleheader 7-4 before falling in game two by a score of 7-0.
In game one,
Steven Casey struck out five Chanticleers over five innings for his first win of the 2021 campaign. In relief,
Greyson Fletcher earned his first save since 2018 by striking out the side in the home half of the ninth.
Overall, the Panther pitchers punched out 13 Chanticleer batters for their seventh double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
Coastal got on the board first in the third before a pair of Panthers scored on a Chanticleer error to give FIU the 2-1 lead.
Juan Teixeira singled home
Steven Ondina in the seventh to push the Panther lead to 3-1. An inning later, FIU poured in four more runs that were highlighted by a
Dante Girardi two-RBI single that scored
Ben Rozenblum and
Derek Cartaya to grow the Panther lead to 7-2.
Coastal added two more runs in the eighth and threatened in the ninth before Fletcher slammed the door shut to seal a 7-4 victory for FIU.
In the nightcap,
JJ Teixeira shined over the final 2.1 innings, as he struck out a career-high five batters and allowed only one hit.
