With more than half of its roster comprised of new players the FIU baseball team has such a different look this coming season that you might need to hand out "Hello, My Name is" stickers at the FIU ballpark. Since there are so many new faces, from now until Opening Day on Feb. 16 when Missouri comes to town for a three-game series, we'll profile the newest Panthers as well as the returning FIU ballplayers.
 
EVERETT HURST, RHP, Freshman
 
What were you doing last baseball season?

EH: I played at Sebring High along with Seth Cannady. I pitched and I hit too. I was a DH and I hit over .300.

What is your best baseball experience?

EH: Probably my last full season with FTB travel ball. We won the national championship in Fort Myers in the fall. Then in the summer we won the WWBA national championship in Georgia.

Give me an example of something that makes baseball such a great game.

EH: Any time someone throws a perfect game is what I think is the most amazing thing about baseball. Because you see how great the game is and how surreal a moment that is. It's a team game because unless he strikes out all 27 guys he needs help to get those outs. You always need the other eight guys on the field to help you.



Tell me something away from baseball about you that someone might find interesting?

EH: I guess I can say Seth Cannady and I grew up together. We came here in the same recruiting class. We've known each other since we were 3 or 4 years old. But I don't have any cows as pets. I live on the other side of Sebring.

FIU coach Mervyl Melendez says about Hurst:

"Everett Hurst has the potential to be a mid-week starter and a reliever. Towards the end of the fall we really saw him get much better."
