Running back Marcus Williams
rushed 26 times for 159 yards and one touchdown,
and quarterback Ron Whitcomb
threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns to
lead the No. 18-ranked Maine Football team
(2-1) to a 24-14 victory over FIU Saturday
evening in Portland, Maine.
Redshirt freshman Josh Padrick
(Merritt Island) brought the Golden Panthers
to within 21-14 but 166 yards in penalties
and missed opportunities in Maine territory
squelched any chance at an upset.
“We played hard, but we’re not
playing smart," said head coach Don
Strock. "We had 65 yards of
penalties in the last drive, alone. On the
road, you can’t have 166 yards in penalties
and think you’re going to be in the
football game. We gave it away last week and
we gave it away this week.
“I know we’re improving. We lost
two games on the road by a total of 13 points.
That’s nothing to be ashamed of but
they were still losses. We have to find a
way to win those games. Until we start playing
smarter, this is the way the outcomes are
going to be.”
FIU (0-2) trailed 7-0 after the first half,
as two turnovers deep in Maine territory kept
the Golden Panthers off the scoreboard.
The first came on the Golden Panthers' initial
possession when Diamos Demerritt
fumbled at the Maine 16, losing the ball to
the Bears defense.
Maine replied with a 84-yard, 15-play march
that was capped by a 7-yard TD pass from Whitcomb
to Kevin McMahan with 4:09
to go in the first quarter.
FIU starting quarterback David Tabor
(Kissimmee) couldn't put points on the board,
completing just one pass for 17 yards, and
was benched in the second quarter in favor
of Padrick.
FIU scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth
quarter to cut the Maine lead to 21-14 with
8:47 remaining in the game. Chris
Patullo (Weston) opened the scoring
with a 21-yard pass reception at 14:53. Then,
after a Nick Turnbull (Miramar)
30-yard interception that he took back to
the Maine 1-yard line, Padrick connected with
fullback Aston Wilson (Casselberry)
with a ball that bounced off several Black
Bear defenders.
Maine added a late 29-yard field goal at
5:07 to ice the game.
Padrick finished the game completing 18-of-31
passes for 192 yards, two touchdowns and two
interceptions. He was sacked three times.
Harold Leath (Tampa) caught
six of those passes for 192 yards, including
one for 53 yards, which set up FIU’s
first score.
“I made a lot of young mistakes that
I’ve got to go back and work on in practice,”
said Padrick. “Coach had been telling
me all week that he was going to put me in
to get me use to this level and to see what
I could do. I guess I got it going a little
bit and stayed in.”
FIU opens its home schedule next Saturday,
Sept. 20 when the Golden Panthers host No.
7 Bethune-Cookman at FIU Stadium. Kickoff
is at 6 p.m. Call (305) FIU-GAME for ticket
