SERIES HISTORY Thursday's game will be the fourth meeting between FIU and Marshall. The Panthers hold the 2-1 advantage in the series, but the Panthers were edged by the Herd earlier in the season, 67-61, for their only loss in the series. The first meeting between the two teams came back in 2014 at the UCF Christmas Classic in Orlando, Fla. This will be the second time FIU and Marshall face off in Miami.
SCOUTING FIUFIU returns home after dropping back-to-back road contests to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd. The two road losses officially outsted the Panthers from this year's Conference USA Championships. Thursday's game will serve as National Girls and Women in Sports Day and is one of two remaining contests in Miami for the season. Last time out, FIU dropped a 77-61 decision at North Texas Saturday afternoon. Three FIU players finished in double-figures, led by redshirt freshman
Kiandre'a Pound who had 19. She was joined by seniors
Zsofia Labady and
Marita Davydova, who added 12 and 10, respectively. Labady's 12 points were a season-best and one point shy of her career-high 13. The trio led FIU in rebounding with a combined 20, led by Davydova's nine. Pound continues to lead the team for the season (15.0 pg) and Davydova leads the Panthers on the boards (9.8 rpg).
SCOUTING MARSHALLMarshall's three-game losing skid was snapped last Saturday with a 71-52 victory over UAB. Senior A.J. Johnson had 21 points to fuel the Herd offense in the win against the Blazers. Fellow seniors Leah Scott and Ezeigbo Chukwuka also contributed double-figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Four players average double-digit scoring figures for the season with Scott leading the way at 14.1 points-per-game, while Chukwuka is one of three players in the conference to average a double-double with 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds-per-game. The Thundering Herd is one of the best defensive teams in the league as they lead C-USA in field goal percentage defense holding their opponents to 37.0 percent from the floor. As a team, Marshall averages 66.0 points-per-game and 40.7 rebounds-per-contest.
POUND EARNS LEAGUE LEADING SIXTH C-USA FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK NODRedshirt freshman
Kiandre'a Pound was named the Conference USA Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season, the league announced this afternoon. She is the only player in FIU history to garner a conference weekly award more than four times in one season. Pound posted two double-digit scoring efforts on the week to average 20.0 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting from the field (13-of-31), 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from three point range and 78.6 percent from the free throw line. The redshirt freshman's 21 points at Rice (Feb. 19) and 19 points at North Texas (Feb. 21) were the 18th and 19th time in 25 games she has reached double figures this season. In the outing at Rice, Pound posted 10 rebounds to notch her eighth double-double on the year. For the week, Pound averaged 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.5 blocks. The Vero Beach, Fla., native continues to lead the Panther offensive threat with an average of 15.0 points per game, raking 10th in the conference.
