Panthers Travel to WKU on FCS

FIU looking to snap a two-game skid

THE GAME: FIU will return to action on Feb. 28 for an 8:00 p.m. ET matchup at Western Kentucky, televised on Fox College Sports. Saturday's game between FIU and WKU will mark the 36th meeting all-time between the two teams, as the Hilltoppers hold a commanding 31-5 lead. The last time these two teams met was on Jan. 17, as FIU fell, 65-58. Dennis Mavin paced FIU's offense with 21 points, while Daviyon Draper shot 7-of-11 for 15 points in the effort and picked up his first-career double-double.
 
NOTES TO KNOW:
• Dennis Mavin became the 14th player in program history to have scored at least 800 career points during their time at FIU vs. Louisiana Tech on Feb. 14. He now ranks 14th at FIU on the career scoring list with 851 points and trails Darius Cook (1997-00) by just five points for the No. 13 spot in FIU's record book.
• Mavin has posted 61 double-digit scoring games and has 10, 20-plus point games for his career, including eight this season. Mavin has led the Panthers in scoring in 21-of-28 games this season.
• Entering Saturday's game, Mavin currently ranks second in Conference USA in scoring (17.3), ninth in defensive rebounds (4.4), 13th in assists (2.9), 12th in steals (1.3) and first in minutes played (35.7).
• With his school record 78 blocks this season, redshirt junior Adrian Diaz needs just seven more blocks to reach 100 for his career. Diaz recorded 15 blocks in his first two seasons at Kansas State.
• Diaz now ranks first in Conference USA in field goal percentage and fourth in the nation, as he is shooting at a 62.6 percent clip.
• Diaz also currently ranks 17th in Conference USA in scoring (13.3), while also ranking seventh in rebounding (6.8) and first in blocked shots (2.8). Diaz has posted five-or-more blocks in seven different games this season and put up a career-high and school record-tying eight-block performance vs. UTSA on Feb. 5.
• Diaz has been strong on the offensive glass for the Panthers, averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds-per-game this season. The 3.2 clip for Diaz ranks fourth in C-USA and 37th nationally.
• Ray Rodriguez is just two points away from hitting the 200-point mark for his career.
• Dominique Williams' 117 rebounds this season ranks as the ninth most in school history for a sophomore. Williams is just two rebounds shy of passing Cesar Bochachia (1989-90) on that list.
• Senior MARCO PORCHER JIMENEZ is just six three-pointers away from 100 career field goals from long distance.
• FIU is 8-6 when coming off a loss. In his two seasons at FIU, head coach ANTHONY EVANS' teams are 16-14 when coming off a loss.
• Entering Thursday, FIU is amonst C-USA leaders in team defense, ranking second in FG percentage defense (.403) and fifth in scoring defense (65.0).
 
SCOUTING WKU: In its first season as a Conference USA member, WKU enters Saturday with a  17-10 overall record and a 10-5 mark in Conference USA action. WKU was recently riding a four-game losing streak before snapping that skid on Thursday night with a 71-68 victory over Florida Atlantic. Leading the way for the Hilltoppers is T.J. Price, who is Conference USA's leading scorer through 27 games as he is averaging 17.9 points-per-contest. Price is a stat sheet filler, as he averaging 5.5 rebounds-per-game and nearly four assists as well. George Fant is a good presence in the post for WKU, as he is averaging 13.7 points to go along with a team-best 8.6 rebounds. Chris Harrison-Docks (10.7) and Trency Jackson (10.2) round out the four double-digit scorers on WKU's roster. The Hilltoppers are a tough team to play at home this season, as they are 12-3 in their friendly confines and 7-1 in C-USA games.
 
LAST TIME OUT: FIU surrendered a season-high 87 points on Thursday night to drop an 87-69 decision to the Marshall Thundering Herd. With the loss, FIU falls to 1-3 all-time against Marshall. Redshirt junior Adrian Diaz led the way for the Panthers, scoring 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior Davion Draper added 12 points to go along with three steals while senior Dennis Mavin chipped in 12 points in 28 minutes of action. Freshman forward Hassan Hussein set career-highs in points (eight), rebounds (three) and field goals made (four). The Panthers shot 42.6 percent from the field for the game, while Marshall shot an even 50 percent. The Thundering Herd built a 44-28 advantage in the first half in large part to six three-pointers being made. For the game, Marshall had 11 makes from three and shot 40.7 percent from long range.
 
NEXT UP: Following its matchup with the Hilltoppers, FIU will return to action on March 5 for a 7:30 p.m. ET matchup with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Lime Court at FIU Arena. Thursday's game between FIU and Middle Tennessee will mark the 33rd meeting all-time between the two teams as the Blue Raiders hold a 25-7 edge in the series history. The last time these two teams met was on Jan. 8, as FIU fell, 65-52. Dennis Mavin netted a career-high 31 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with four made from beyond the arc, tying a career-best.
