Box Score FIU got the pitching it needed and some timely hitting to defeat Florida A&M, 7-4, on Tuesday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
Right-hander
John Caballero pitched a career-high seven innings, allowed one earned run and struck out a career-high nine batters to record the victory. With the long outing, Caballero (1-1) also gave the FIU bullpen a night off as
Jason Morozowski was the only other pitcher used Tuesday against the Rattlers. Morozowski pitched two innings in relief.
The Panthers (16-12) got all the runs they needed on a pair of home runs. After T.J. Shantz walked in the first inning,
Edwin Rios started the offensive output for FIU with a two-run home run to vault the Panthers to a 2-0 lead. Rios's high, arching shot landed in the preserve in right.
In the fourth inning, FAMU starter Javon Johnakin walked
Zach Sweety and
Chris May before Shantz blasted a three-run home run deep into the soccer field beyond the left field wall. FIU led 5-0.
FIU tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles by
Roche Woodard and
Oscar Aguirre, respectively.
Woodard was 3 for 4.
Aramis Garcia was 2 for 4 and re-took the team lead in batting average with a .348 clip.
The Panthers and the Rattlers conclude the two-game series with a matinee on Wednesday. The first pitch for the series finale Wednesday is at 4 p.m.
