Box Score MIAMI (Feb. 19, 2014) - The FIU baseball team earned a 5-2 victory over the Stetson Hatters on Wednesday night, to improve to 5-0 overall, its best start since the 2010 season. Freshman right-hander Christopher Mourelle picked up his first career victory and senior
Mike Gomez earned his 19th career save, moving him up to just four saves behind the program's career saves record.
FIU was the first team to strike in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, junior
Julius Gaines singled and junior
Aramis Garcia doubled to give FIU runners on second and third. Junior
Josh Anderson grounded to the shortstop, who opted to throw home. Gaines beat the throw to give FIU its first run. Then, senior
Zach Sweety singled and drove in a run to give FIU a 2-0 lead. Sweety had three hits on the evening.
After the Hatters plated one in the second inning, FIU responded with a run in the bottom half on a rare double-error. The Panthers led 3-1 after two innings.
Mourelle was solid for the night, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run while punching out two batters. Mourelle's control was good too, as he surrendered just one walk. He was relieved by sophomore
Charles Cormier in the sixth inning. FIU's bullpen, consisting of Cormier, senior
Mitchell Davis, senior
Albert Cardenas and Gomez, was strong, not allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings of work.
With the 3-2 lead, FIU plated two more insurnance runs in the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch and throwing error.
FIU is back in action this weekend with a three-game set against Stony Brook. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. from the FIU Baseball Stadium.
