No. 29 @FIUBaseball Takes Third Game from UAB, 2-0

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 30, 2014) – The 29th-ranked FIU baseball team (22-6, 7-5) picked up a 2-0 victory over the UAB Blazers on Sunday afternoon. The shutout for the Panther pitching staff gives them 10 this year, moving into second place in FIU's single season shutouts list.
 
Freshman right-hander Chris Mourelle improved to a perfect 5-0 in the victory, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and striking out three hitters. He lowered his season ERA to 0.73. Senior Mike Gomez picked up his 21st career save, moving just two saves shy of tying Ozzie Lugo for first on FIU's all-time saves list. Juniors Aramis Garcia and Josh Anderson each had two hits for the Panthers.
 
The Panthers scored their first run of the weekend in the second inning. Freshman Brandon Gomez reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a base-hit from junior L.K. Thompson. Junior Julius Gaines then reached on a fielder's choice to score Gomez, giving FIU a 1-0 lead.
 
Garcia led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line for his second hit of the game. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Anderson drove him in with a single up the middle, putting the Panthers up 2-0.
 
Along with Gomez's two-inning save, FIU got strong relief pitching from sophomore Charles Cormier, senior Mitchell Davis and freshman Gunnar McNeill.
 
The Panthers are back in action this Tuesday, hosting Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. at the  FIU Baseball Stadium.

Season tickets for the FIU baseball season are on sale. Tickets for the 2014 campaign cost just $50 per ticket for all fans this year. Fans can purchase tickets online, over the phone by calling 305-FIU-GAME, or in person at the R. Kirk Landon Fieldhouse Box Office. Student admission is free to all FIU baseball home games.
