Hibbert’s Two-Out, Two-Run Single Lifts FIU over ECU to Sweep Series

Box Score REENVILLE, N.C. (May 4, 2014) – FIU Baseball (34-12, 14-10) got a clutch, two-out, two-run single from senior Tyler Hibbert in the top of the eighth inning, giving the Panthers a 2-1 victory over East Carolina (28-21, 13-11) to sweep the series on Sunday afternoon.
 
Freshman Chris Mourelle improved to 8-2 with a 1.76 ERA in the victory, as he gave up six hits and just one earned run. Senior Mike Gomez earned career save number 25, as he closed out the final 1 1/3 innings of the game. Senior Zach Sweety led the Panthers with two hits.
East Carolina got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as the Pirates recorded three-straight base-hits to lead off the inning, resulting in the one run.
 
With one out in the top of the eighth inning, junior L.K. Thompson walked and then was pinch-ran for by freshman Kolby Follis. Junior Roche Woodard followed with a base-hit, where Follis moved to third on. Then with two outs, Hibbert delivered a big two-run single to put the Panthers ahead 2-1.
 
Mourelle got one out in the eighth, and then handed the ball over to senior Mitchell Davis, who punched out ECU's Zach Houchins. From there, Gomez came in to earn the final four outs to tack on another save to his school record.
 
FIU is next in action this Wednesday, as it hosts South Florida at 6 p.m.
